Prelature of Bocas del Toro agrees limits and circumstances with the province of the same name. It was created in October 1962 and officially erected on February 29, 1964.

On that day took over as its first prelate Monsignor Martin Legarra, and it made ​​us Recollects charge of the pastoral care of the prelature by the Province of Our Lady of Consolation.

The prelature is divided into five parishes: The Bocas del Toro is the oldest, founded in 1883, origin and starting point of this local church.

It includes the islands of the archipelago, the coast of Chiriqui Lagoon to the tip of Daira. Its area is about 1,650 km2, and population of seven thousand inhabitants, more or less. The parish is dedicated to the Virgen del Carmen.
